Speech and Drama is a short course offered at ETSS Wicklow. We believe that Speech and Drama is about enabling young people to communicate effectively through a meaningful study of texts.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Students will engage with poetry, dramatic texts, declamations, public speaking, drama games, improvisation, and performance.
This course is a blend of classic speech and drama training and contemporary communication skills. Students will develop an awareness of the elements of drama (role, character and relationships, situation, voice, movement, space and time, language and texts, symbol and metaphor, mood and atmosphere, audience and, dramatic tension). At the same time, students will have the opportunity to apply speech and drama skills to modern everyday contexts such as speaking on camera and exploring the “YouTube voice”.
SKILLS ASSOCIATED WITH SPEECH & DRAMA
Speech and Drama supports skills in communication, teamwork, dialogue, negotiation, and socialization. It fosters creativity and imagination. It helps us to improve our understanding of human behaviour and to empathise with a range of diverse situations. Students will learn to engage an audience and to communicate with confidence and charisma.
Students will be formatively assessed throughout the year and will participate in term assessments also. Assessments may include individual or group performances, in person or recorded.
